Christmas History:
The history and origin of this best loved holiday of the year, Christmas, can be traced to about 4000 years back in time, and is related to the early Mesopotamians. It is widely assumed that many practices and ceremonial facets of Yuletide can be found at a time long before Christ was born, the time when the early Mesopotamians lived. The history of Yuletide is, thus, back in centuries.
The Mesopotamians had a 12 day-long New Year’s holiday called the Zagmuk, which was celebrated to help their chief god Marduk in his battle against the monsters of chaos. Annually in winter, the Mesopotamian king historically visited Marduk’s church and at the end, the custom was to murder the king who would then go with Marduk in the battleground. However, the genuine king was spared and a ridicule king ( who was nearly always a criminal wearing royal robes ) was slain.
As time went on and Christianity spread to each nook and corner of the Earth, the Church slowly loosened up a little, and came to accept the merry-making during Yuletide . Today, Xmas is truly unfinished without those decorations of tinsel and streamers, the lights and candles, the piping hot turkey with pies around, the decked halls, the mistletoe on the doorway, the holly, and the stockings over the fireplace, the bells on the Yuletide tree and the colorful greetings and gifts. Now ever puzzled why Xmas is celebrated on December twenty-five ? Is it the moment when Jesus Christ was born ? Well, no-one knows for sure precisely when Christ was born. There had been plenty of dispute over fixing December twenty-five as Yuletide . In the following century A.D, Hippolytus claimed this day as Christ’s birthday. Then Jan six was announced by the Eastern Church as the day of His birth.
Ultimately , in 350 A.D, the Bishop of Rome, Pope Julius I, fixed December twenty-five as the official day for Xmas . This date, the day of the winter solstice, was wisely selected with the plan to outweigh the well-liked pagan Roman vacation of Saturnalia. The birth Jesus Christ’s coming to this world was expected by the soothsayers years before His birth. The Old Testament contais 300 such predictions about the birth of Jesus. And, you will be really shocked to grasp that all these proved true-from Christ’s supernormal birth, His sinless life, His terrible death to His astonishing resurrection. Now, if you would like to understand the entire story of Christ, read on. There lived in the hamlet of Nazareth a wood worker called Joseph, who married a young virgin named Mary of the same hamlet. Mary once had a pretty dream in which an angel came to her and recounted she had been selected to bear the Divine Kid , Jesus, the Boy of God.
But the young couple was compelled to leave Nazareth and return to their cities of birth following a whimsical stipulation of the emperor there.
And so, they set off for Bethlehem. It seemed to be a really long trip spanning many days and nights. Mary, who was bearing Jesus at the point, was carried by a mule, and Joseph walked beside her. After some days, they reached Bethlehem.
They were refused by all the inns because they have no more room for them. At last, the fatigued couple chanced on a cave in the hills, with a stable in it. Joseph uses the hay in the stable to make a bed for his wife that is exhausted from the traveling all the way to Bethlehem. The following night, Mary gave birth to the Boy of God and named Him Jesus, as was instructed by the angel in her dream. When Jesus was borned, there was a bright star in the sky which you can see from over Bethlehem. In the mountainous fields nearby, some shepherds were handling their flocks, when an angel appeared before them and told them a Savior was born in Bethlehem. The shepherds were additionally told that they were to find the chick in a manger, wrapped up in swaddling garments. They shortly reached the place where Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary. Also, following the shining star in the sky, came the 3 Sensible Men from the east, who are way more popularly called the Magi. According to the bible, the three wisemen offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh after they bowing down to pay respect to Him. These gifts had a special symbolic importance. The gold designated Kingship- that He would be a King. Frankincense designated His Divine nature, and myrrh stood for a life of suffering and sacrifice.
Did you know where the word ‘Christmas’ sprang from ? Xmas springs from the words ‘Cristes Maesse’, meaning Christ’s Mass. It is also often known as Christmas . The ‘X’ in Xmas is derived from the Greek word ‘Xristos which means Christ in Greek. Xristos Mass is then translated into Yule in English.
However, this should not be looked on as a move to push off Christ’s name from Xmas . It’s simply an alternative way of referring to Yuletide . So wish a ‘Merry Christmas’ to your family and dive into celebrating the vacations !
